June 2006 - The End?

We have known for a while now - a year? - that there will be big changes in MK's department at work. And over the course of last year ('05) the decision was made to close down MK's dept here and move it all to the office in Melbourne (where they have an identical dept). All the permanent staff in the dept here were asked if they wanted to stay here but move to a different dept, go to Melb on a short term assignment, move to Melb permanently or leave the company. The contractors were not offered the same options, except MK. He was asked if he was interested in moving to Melbourne. We said yes. And the time frame at that stage was to have it all finalised by the beginning of 2007. Even though our original plan was to return to Adelaide, once we were offered the chance to move to Melb it became increasingly attractive. Not only was it the guarantee of a job (possibly a permanent position) but it also meant we'd be near family. And the thought of not parenting in isolation anymore is attractive to both of us. So many people will win if we are living near family.

Anyway, it is now looking like there will be no job in Melbourne...the whole lot is going to be outsourced. No official announcement has been made but it's not looking good. So come June it looks like there will be no job for MK here in Switzerland nor in Melbourne with this company. Bummer really. But I refuse to be too worried about it. Now that we've visualised moving back to Melbourne, we will still go down that track. And I suppose it means MK needs to start looking for a job in Melbourne...somehow.
